A dramatic architectural intervention vastly improves the courtyard at Leonard + Helena Mazur Hall on Temple University’s campus
This event and community hub provides a central space for Temple University students, physically joining the circulation spaces at Leonard + Helena Mazur and Gladfelter Halls. The glass parabolic shaped courtyard infill invites students, faculty and neighbors to a soaring space and promotes informal gatherings and social space. The wood slat ceiling emphasizes the expressive shape, and uplighting the warm wood contrasts the clear and open glass.
The lighting challenge maintains the pristine shape without focusing on the actual luminaires and provides enough lighting for individual study and screen use when seated. Floodlights are discretely placed on the structure to softly and evenly illuminate the ceilings. A continuous channel of light follows the graceful curve at the underside of the mezzanine level. During the daytime, abundant sunlight fills the space, yet artificial light provides the consistency for this warm and welcoming space on campus.
