By using color-changing technology, BEAM created a kinetic and engaging façade to enhance the ‘TV fuzz’ effect
PhillyCAM, a nonprofit that facilitates new communications via a public access system on cable television, renovated a mid-century modern building for their new home in downtown Philadelphia. With a vertical sawtooth upper façade, the designer’s concept incorporated the reminiscent graphic of television static on an empty channel on analog TV sets. The graphic, made of colored metal panels, is enhanced by a simple yet effective lighting design.
Using LED luminaires with a distinct beam pattern, the lighting is contained within the building recesses, not contributing to the light pollution of the urban environment. The luminaires are carefully aimed to eliminate any potential glare from inside the adjacent windows.
BEAM designed the control system, developing and programming a variety of light shows, incorporating rainbow chases, color washes and strobe effects.
