Illumination in an art collector’s stunning Passive House shines

The homeowner is an avid art collector with fantastic views of the property. The lighting challenges included: properly illuminate artwork throughout the home, avoid glare in the large expanse glass for the windows and doors, and provide an unobstructed view of the Japanese influence garden and pathways. The lighting followed suit of the clean lines, minimalism and mid-century modern the architect designed, combined with 21st century energy efficiency and Passive Home (PHIUS certified) requirements.

The open front entryway, with dark mild steel staircase and several oversize paintings, looks down into the lower-level art gallery, requiring flexible track lighting to focus on the art. Small aperture square downlights balance the hallway lighting.

Rectangular aperture micro-louver downlights provide general illumination in large volume Kitchen, Dining and Great Room, with recessed micro track placed in front of the fireplace and opposite wall to illuminate large format paintings.

The lower level is treated like an art gallery, with performance track lighting to provide flexibility to illuminate the owner’s small form and large-scale contemporary paintings and mixed media, allowing for rotating artwork.

BEAM seamlessly integrated the lighting design with the minimalist aesthetic for this breathtaking mid-century modern showpiece.
