As a unifying element on Villanova University’s campus, the athletic pavilion successfully marries lighting and architecture
BEAM designed asymmetric linear luminaries concealed in the structure to illuminate the canopy, reinforcing the strong architectural plane. This striking effect is contrasted by the texture of the intersecting stone wall. In-grade uplights wrap the wall connecting the exterior to the interior.
The University’s (then Cabrini) limited budget required judicious placement of simple and straightforward LED recessed linear fixtures; therefore, BEAM placed them in a dynamic configuration to emphasize movement, reinforcing the focus on fitness and wellness. Luminaires seamlessly integrate into both wood and acoustical ceilings. This linear concept repeats in different spaces throughout the building, providing design continuity and ease of maintenance for end-users.
With the abundant glazing, daylight harvesting was necessary to reduce energy. Dimming allows for flexibility and response to sunlight throughout the day. Through lighting, the athletic pavilion connects the built and natural environment beautifully.
