Principal Kirsten Carangi discovered a hidden gem in Glenside, PA in this 1963 one-story, flat-roofed building and envisioned a new studio for BEAM. With 17” wide floor-to-ceiling windows ringing the 1800sf building, she knew it was the perfect place for BEAM designers to work. Large intermediate wall expanses in between the windows allow natural light to enter the space but still provide the ability for the designers to demonstrate and study luminaires beam spreads and light output.
The original architecture was respected, yet a full interior and roof demolition was needed to bring out the beauty of the one-story wood + steel framed space, to create an open and airy studio. An entirely new floorplan emerged with individual workspaces, conference, storage and an open pantry/kitchen. The original windows and doors were upgraded with insulating glass, the original concrete floors were exposed and epoxied, and a new central core for restrooms, huddle space and pantry were created, and capped with an overhanging soffit.
The lighting throughout BEAM’s space highlights Senior Designer Christina Spangler’s creative design sense. Black linear pendants provide a contrast to the painted exposed wood beam ceiling, providing task light at each desk, and highlighting artwork – photos of BEAM’s work – in between the windows. The luminaires are tunable white, and in combination with a robust control system, provide a circadian lighting solution for the BEAM team to experience daily and demonstrate to visiting clients.
The transformation from a dated pediatric office into a new professional workspace is remarkable. The new layout, furnishings and lighting breathe new life into a unique 60’s building.
With the color-changing cove lighting, this charming building also becomes prominent at night in the small commercial corridor in Glenside, and glows monumentally in the evening hours. We are excited to open our doors to our clients and collaborators, to see our new space, with our motorized shades, control system and lighting!
