Wannamaker House

Creating a welcome beacon for residents and guests and evenly backlighting the new frosted storefront glass was crucial goal in relighting the Lobby at The Wannamaker House. Existing conditions presented varied depths between walls and glazing at different sections. The backlight system is carefully spaced to accommodate these variations and successfully frame the lobby entrance. The new HVAC system created a condition of extremely limited ceiling depth through most of the ground floor lobby space yet the importance of highlighting accent wall surfaces remained. BEAM created a unique mounting detail using a standard shallow housing to create an effective and visually unobtrusive solution that balances the wall washing cove lighting with the popped-up ceiling expressions. Original works of fine art are featured throughout the renovation. Location of adjustable luminaires is crucial so as to best reveal the artists’ intention and material qualities. Concealing the light sources is also important so the luminaires do not distract from the artwork or the architecture. Establishing a strong interior identity at the entrance, BEAM worked with the architect and custom luminaire manufacturer and oversaw the recreation of a classic decorative luminaire that celebrates the arrival of the digital age.
