The restored and reimagined pedestrian student bridge at Fairleigh Dickinson University campus replaced a crumbling concrete-and-chain-link walkway to connect the university’s split campuses. A densely planted garden path reflects and restores the native ecosystem; low level lighting reinforces this concept and draws students across the bridge. Color-changing lighting on the outer sides of the bridge attracts students from afar and reflects at low light levels into the water to not disrupt nighttime river habitat and bird migration. Illuminating the shade structures and providing safe and attractive lighting at nighttime creates a learning landscape for students and chance encounters important to academic life.
