As a new unifying element on the University campus, the athletic pavilion successfully marries lighting and architecture. Asymmetric linear luminaries concealed in the structure illuminate the canopy. In-grade uplights wrap the wall connecting the exterior to the interior. A limited budget required judicious placement of simple and straightforward LED recessed linear fixtures, but utilizing them in a dynamic configuration emphasizes movement, thus reinforcing the University’s focus on fitness and wellness. Fixtures seamlessly integrate into both wood and acoustical ceilings.
With the abundant glazing, daylight harvesting was necessary to reduce energy. Consideration was also taken to balance lighting in spaces with little or no natural light. The result is uniform lighting where needed, within recommended levels for the variety of uses. Dimming allows for flexibility and response to sunlight throughout the day. Through lighting, the athletic pavilion connects the built and natural environment beautifully.
