Academy House Lobby

As the entry point for over 500 residents, the lobby required a drastic renovation in both materials and lighting to simultaneously aid the building’s older residents in navigating the spaces, and attract a younger residential clientele appreciating a modern aesthetic. BEAM placed pendants at varying heights on the lobby’s ceiling plane to provide design continuity. The residents are greeted by a well-illuminated front desk with a welcoming path to stairs, mail room, elevators and seating nook for guests. Utilizing 3500K accent lighting purposely interspersed with 3000K downlighting warms the interior finishes. In addition to the pendants above the reception desk, textured walls are illuminated as well as artwork, seating and interior plantings. Oversize drum pendants punctuate the small elevator lobby, reflecting the gesture of the new large scale pendants at the exterior arcade as well.

Overall, a cohesive and well-matched lighting scheme with the use of performance fixtures ensures lighting levels meet all applicable energy codes. With ‘layers of light’ in the redesigned lobby, the playful lighting scheme greatly enhances the stately entrance to this well-loved home to many in Philadelphia.
