Grundy Library

Originally constructed in 1966, the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library’s post-modern concrete building was in need of a significant interior modernization. BEAM developed a lighting design that utilized the existing architecture and initiated the integration of the lighting and the acoustical systems. Using round, indirect fluorescent fixtures suspended below the rectilinear configuration, light bounced from the acoustical panels to illuminate the general areas and some library stacks without shadows or glare. The lighting refreshed an architectural language that some consider to have become dated, while providing a consistent backdrop that highlighted the extensive interior improvements.
